Coach
Barrack Ouma's Nairobi Stima were crowned the Madaraka Day Cup
champions after beating the Ligi Ndogo Planets 5-4 on post match
penalties on Saturday 1 June 2013.
The
game also doubled up as an FKF Division One Zone A group 1 league
match;the teams had tied 1-1 in regular time at the Nyayo National
Stadium.
Ligi
Ndogo struck first.On the 14th minute,Captain Sammy Machio caught
Nairobi Stima behind on a counter and long-balled a pass to first year
striker Leonard Ochieng who raced full length to deliver a cut back
cross to the onrushing Brian Kimechwa Yator.
Stima came close on the 27th when Vincent Mbindyo struck the cross bar with a left footed snap shot.
On
the 50th minutes,Planet's Machio had a chance to tuck the game away
when he was clothes-lined in the box by Stima defender,Morris
Ochieng.His predictable strike was coolly parried out by Stima keeper
kennedy Omondi.
In
the 70th minute,Planet midfielder Brian Yator limped off with a knock
on his knee. Stima stepped the pedal and went full out for an
equalizer.Captain Sammy Machio's handball on the left,six meters in the
Planet half,proved costly.Geoffrey Wangalwa's tricky lob shot caught
goalkeeper Tom Muthomi on the back-pedal. His eventual stumble gifted
Stima an equalizer.
Richard
Ogada came close once again for Stima in the 79th but his powerful shot
echoed back into the field of play.On the 80th minute Sammy Machio had
to hand over his armband to the newly introduced Mike Machiek as he
received his marching orders for handling the ball,and a second bookable
offense.
Shoot out
During
the shoot-out to break the Cup deadlock,Planet's striker Edgar Odhiambo
and defender Arthur Weyula missed their spot kicks.Goalkeeper Kennedy
Omondi scored for Stima,on the seventh penalty to lift the Cup.
Standing
In
the league,with points shared at 1-1, both Nairobi Stima and Ligi Ndogo
are tied on 16 points from ten games played.Due to a superior goal
(+10,+4), Stima sits fourth,two steps a top the Planets.
Planets close the first leg with a trip to Kinoru against number eleven,Kambakia Christian Centre on the 15th June.
