The Winning Starts:Ides of May

With 206 matches played into the month of May, the 2012 FKF Division One league is still warped up in a head racking twine, with every team certain of its standing only after the outcome of its next fixture.Even tail enders,Mathare United still have a realistic chance of finishing the first round in a favourable mid table position.
Roller Coaster
So does Ministry of Youth and Sports (MOYAS).
They are on a four game roller coaster ride as they play this Saturday and Sunday, home and away, respectively. The Planets,Bidco and Iron strikers are locked on fourth spot with 17 points each and only separated by number of goals scored and conceded; and so are number seven(s!) Nairobi Stima,Sparkie Youth, Administration Police, KRA and Admiral at 16.MOYAS trail, not far off, with 14 and a plausible chance at crashing the four team party at the top , if they can replicate last weekend’s dream performance and rack up another six of six from two matches.
They are at home in a redone fixture match versus a plucky Nairobi Stima team and a chippy Planet team who have a whole constellation to loose.
The Planets dropped three points against Kariobangi Sharks last weekend and are now ten points adrift off top spot..and reckon they have a lot to lose should they falter this weekend.

Composition

The current league is made up of teams that played in last season’s KFF league, FKL league and Nationwide division two league, which was a tier below the FKL league.
Green Berets, Gatundu Stars,Iron Strikers,Coast United and MOYAS are the teams that won promotion from the Nationwide division two league,to the current combined FKF Division One league. MOYAS finished fourth in that league. So far MOYAS, have been upto the task representing the right way and second, among the five siblings, after 6th placed Iron Strikers.

Popular metre
Prison based Moyas may not stretch one’s memory as a top club, but it sure boasts as a shortstop to some big names. Kenyan international Victor Mugabe did a short stint at the club from 2004 to 2005.So did Italy and Parma based McDonald Mariga (2000-2002) and Sofapaka's Thomas Wanyama. The club has been in existence for 22 years.

That should add verve to their psychic flow as they explore currently unfamiliar territory.
And so they are.Moyas have ambushed the league. They have adopted the flow and in the process embarked on a merry stint of their own, wracking Ws with abandon. Four wins in a row and a draw,in the last five matches, and a meteoric rise has elevated them to one of the league's supermen. This came after a false start that included loses to low riding Admiral and Bidco United,in a normal welcome to the big leagues fashion.

Rise and rise

Moyas were rooted in the bottom five of the league for most part of March,at the start of the season, as the Planets were doing the Cinderella dance. Then they ignited the run that saw them light Administration Police in a road game at Kenyatta Stadium. This took them to 11th,then 9th after they beat Mombasa based,Congo JMJ,the next weekend to ice a perfect weekend. They are now placed 12th with eight matches played (three less than the Planets), four wins, two drops and two ties. They have scored ten goals and conceded eight for 14 points.
The wins over AP and Congo were part of the four match winning streak that preceded wins over Green Berets and KSL Thola Glass.

Maiden meeting
Though the two teams have never met in any competition before, they  tangoed in an exhibition match in 2010 at the Prisons ground. It ended in a 1-1 tie.MOYAS was then called Minnicus. Cameroonian Jules Tenekeng scored first for the Planets.MOYAS equalized in the 70th minute after which the match was ended due to darkness!
Planets are more confident than ever as they plan to bring to an end,one of the longest winning runs in the league.Only the Administration Police have had a longer winning streak,at five matches.
This would be an interesting matchup, all the same. The Planets have never lost back to back since, mark that, the Superleague, and that is,seven years ago, while Moyas, after getting the feel of competition, have not lost in their last five matches played this season. The Planets have not lost at home this season (only four other teams:Kariobangi Sharks,Bandari  Green Berets and Admiral, hold the same distinction after five and more games played at home),but have dropped six points in three draws. They are currently sixth with twelve points won at home, nine goals scored and four conceded.

MOYAS so far
MOYAS is fourth with most points on the road (7 after KRA Stima and Bandari). They have two wins,a draw and a loss on the road. They have scored four times on the road and conceded three goals.MOYAS, Bandari and the Planets have conceded the least number of goals on the road (three, with Gatundu Stars,at twelve, conceding the most number of goals).

In the teams-played against matchup,The Planets got one point out of a possible six from KRA and Bandari while conceding once. MOYAS got two points and a goal in each draw to the two teams. The Planets and Coast’s Magongo Rangers stand as the only teams who have scored only two goals on the road, the least in the league (compares with Nairobi Stima’s 7 and highest) to MOYAS’ four. The Planets are 11th on the away log, while MOYAS sit third after KRA and Nairobi Stima.

Confident Planets
The Planets have won two of their last five matches, tied two and lost once. They have scored six and conceded five en route to eight points. They are a distant ninth in the log in road points.MOYAS are the highest road earners and sit on top with an impressive 13 points in the last five matches. They have won four and tied once. In the process they scored seven goals and conceded three.

Planets on the rise
The Planets approach the match with caution, though they sit pretty playing at home. The return of central defender, Salim Abdalla, who had been out on suspension,  and a sudden maturity and cohesion in the frontline will favor the Planets as they plot to start a winning streak of their own, which stands at two and dates back to the first week of play.Defensive stalwart,Harry Gentle teams at the back with Bobby Ogolla,Victor Dufe and Benjamin Kipruto.Harry had a perfect outing against K Sharks with only one incomplete pass zero turnovers and fourteen gained possessions.
The departure of midfielder,Marvin Onyango to the national U20 team and the absence of captain Sammy Machio (knock knee) should not affect the team much.Victor Muchina and Cornelius Ekene filled in superbly at midfield,in their last match  played at Sharks. They combined for most balls won (13) for non regular players. So was the introduction of Sven Yida, who completed seven passes and lost the ball only once in eighteen minutes.

So Sunday 6th  of May 2012 it is.

May the winning Start!
Planet Starters Samuel Njau (GK),Bobby Ogolla,Benjamin Kipruto,Victor Dufe,Harry Gentle,Salim Abdalla,Brillian Ochieng,Cliff Ouma,Tom Murila,Sven YidaC and Charmant Chihuguyu
